Fascial Distortion Model: Manual Therapy Intro

Matt Booth, PT, DPT

FDM teaches the pattern recognition of patients' subtle, and often subconscious hand gestures when they describe their symptoms. Knowing these patterns can help the clinician to choose a manual therapy method that will deliver immediate changes in range of motion, as well as perceived pain and stiffness. Manual treatment and exercise applied with FDM thinking often leads to faster and sometimes dramatic positive differences in outcomes compared to traditional treatment. FDM is a different lens to view the patient's condition as well as another lens to view the provider's treatments, often filling in gaps in theory and application of other models. This evidence-informed class will blend modern pain science with new theories. This class will show how to incorporate traditional manual therapy techniques into your treatment for faster results, and will also introduce new techniques and new ways of thinking about how and when to use your old techniques. This class is directed to PTs, and is also open to PTAs (recommend the supervising PT be trained in FDM), as well as other healthcare professionals (MD, DO, PA, NP, OT, DC, DPM).

Course learning objectives:

1. Define the Fascial Distortion Model

2. Define each of the six principal types of fascial distortions

3. Identify the body language for each of the six principal types of fascial distortions

4. Formulate a diagnosis of a patient with a dysfunction of the ankle using the Fascial Distortion Model

5. Use verbal skills in order to easily articulate to patients and other healthcare providers what you are doing
